A beard transplant moves hair from the back of your scalp to the jaw, cheeks, moustache or chin, filling patches or building density where facial hair never grew. At Valentmedica it costs £1,500–£2,300 for up to 2,000 grafts, in a single day with three nights in Istanbul.
Beard and moustache patients who travelled to Istanbul with Valentmedica, photographed at twelve months. Graft counts and areas treated are listed with each case.
A beard transplant takes follicular units from the donor area at the back of the scalp and places them into the face, following the specific angle and direction that facial hair grows.
Technically it is FUE or DHI, the same extraction and placement as a scalp transplant. What makes it a different operation is the angle. Scalp hair leaves the skin at roughly 30–45 degrees; beard hair leaves at 10–20 degrees, lying almost flat against the face, and the direction changes across every region — downward on the cheeks, outward along the jaw, downward and slightly inward on the moustache.
Place a beard graft at a scalp angle and it stands out from the face like a bristle. This is why beard work is often done with DHI — the Choi implanter gives per-graft control over angle that a blade and forceps cannot easily match, particularly along the moustache where the margin must be precise.
| Area | Typical grafts | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Moustache | 350–700 | Highest precision required |
| Goatee and chin | 600–900 | Dense packing looks natural here |
| Cheeks, both sides | 600–1,200 | Patchy areas or full build |
| Sideburns, both sides | 200–500 | Often combined with cheeks |
| Full beard | 1,800–3,000 | Sometimes split across two sessions |
| Scar camouflage | 150–600 | Depends on scar size |
A Valentmedica all-inclusive beard package in Istanbul costs £1,500–£2,300 for up to 2,000 grafts. The UK equivalent is typically £5,000–£9,000.
| Treatment | Price (GBP) | Grafts included | Nights in Turkey |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moustache only | £1,200–£1,600 | Up to 700 | 3 |
| Goatee and chin | £1,400–£1,900 | Up to 1,000 | 3 |
| Cheeks and jawline | £1,600–£2,100 | Up to 1,500 | 3 |
| Full beard | £1,800–£2,300 | Up to 2,000 | 3 |
| Full beard, DHI | £2,100–£2,700 | Up to 2,000 | 3 |
| Scar camouflage | £900–£1,500 | Up to 600 | 3 |
If you need both, doing them in the same trip is usually cheaper than two separate ones — but only if your donor area can supply the total. A full beard plus a Norwood 4 scalp is around 5,000 grafts, which is more than most donor areas should give in one sitting. Your surgeon will tell you whether to split it.
Elsewhere you usually pay for the operation alone. A Valentmedica package also includes your hospital stay, hotel, transfers and a personal coordinator.

Indicative figures, not a quote. Bars show the usual range in each market; overseas figures are typically surgeon and facility only. Flights are an estimate for a return economy fare. Your price is confirmed in writing after a clinician has reviewed your case.
The best candidates have a healthy scalp donor area, realistic expectations about density, and a beard pattern that has been stable for at least a couple of years.
Our self-check below gives you a starting answer, and a Valentmedica surgeon reviews your photographs free of charge before you commit to anything.
Three nights in Istanbul and one day in the clinic — shorter than a full scalp transplant because graft numbers are lower.
You send photographs of your face from the front and both sides, plus your donor area. A surgeon assesses your pattern, recommends graft numbers by region and you receive a written fixed quote.
Your driver meets you at Istanbul airport and takes you to the hotel. Do not shave — your surgeon needs to see your existing growth pattern.
Blood tests, then the beard line is drawn on your face with you sitting upright in front of a mirror. You approve the shape before anything starts. Donor area shaved, extraction for two to three hours, then placement. Four to seven hours in total.
You return to the clinic for your first wash, performed by a nurse who teaches you the technique, plus your aftercare kit.
A final check and transfer to the airport.
Crusts clear from the face. This is the visible phase, and it is on your face rather than under your hair.
The transplanted hairs shed. Expected, and the follicle remains.
First new growth, patchy and uneven at first.
The final result, generally faster than a scalp transplant.
The hospital and hotel you will be using, and the specifics you can check before you pay a deposit.
The facility is named to you in writing, with its licence and accreditation numbers, so you can verify it rather than take our word for it. If you would like to see the building, ask: we can usually arrange a visit before you decide.
Four to seven hours under local anaesthetic. You are awake throughout and can talk and eat between stages.
The face is more visible than the scalp, so plan around ten days. Shaving can usually resume at two weeks, and the final result arrives at nine to twelve months.
Beard transplants carry the same low risk profile as scalp FUE, with the added consideration that any imperfection is on your face rather than hidden in your hair.
Valentmedica works only with licensed clinics and hospitals in Istanbul, and with doctors registered with the Turkish Ministry of Health. Your surgeon designs the beard line and performs the placement personally. You are given their name and registration number before you pay anything.
If you have a history of keloid scarring or persistent facial acne, raise it at assessment. Neither necessarily rules you out, but both change the plan.
Yes, most commonly with a scalp transplant or an eyebrow transplant in the same trip — provided your donor area can supply the total.
The limit is not the surgeon's time, it is your donor area. Every graft is a withdrawal from a finite account, and a session that takes 5,000 grafts to cover a beard and a scalp leaves nothing for a second scalp session in five years.
A second beard session twelve months later is common where density is the goal rather than coverage — the first session establishes shape, the second thickens it once you can see how the first grew.
Do not shave before you travel, stop blood thinners and alcohol, and plan around ten days of visible redness on your face.
Transplanted beard hair is permanent and grows for life. The final result arrives at nine to twelve months, slightly faster than a scalp transplant, and the hair can be shaved, trimmed and styled normally.
Because the hair comes from your scalp, it keeps scalp growth characteristics — it grows faster and longer than native beard hair, so it will need trimming more often. Most patients find this a minor inconvenience rather than a problem, and once everything is kept to the same length the blend is seamless.
Expect shape before density. A first session establishes the beard line and fills the obvious gaps; a second twelve months later is what produces a genuinely thick beard if that is the goal. Judge nothing before nine months — at three to four months the growth is patchy and uneven, and almost every patient finds that phase discouraging. You can see twelve-month outcomes in our hair transplant before and after gallery.
At Valentmedica, £1,500–£2,300 all-inclusive for up to 2,000 grafts, or £1,200–£1,600 for a moustache alone. That covers the surgeon, the procedure, two hotel nights, all transfers, your aftercare kit and twelve months of growth reviews. The UK equivalent is typically £5,000–£9,000.
Roughly 350–700 for a moustache, 600–900 for a goatee and chin, 600–1,200 for both cheeks, and 1,800–3,000 for a full beard. Your surgeon confirms the number by region from your photographs.
The donor area at the back of your scalp, the same source as a hair transplant. This matters: every beard graft is one not available for your head later, so plan both if you have pattern baldness or a family history of it.
If it is placed at the right angle, yes. Beard hair lies almost flat against the face at 10–20 degrees, against 30–45 for scalp hair. Grafts placed at a scalp angle stand out like bristles, which is why many surgeons use DHI for beard work.
Usually from about two weeks, with your surgeon's confirmation. Start with an electric razor rather than a blade. After the first month you can shave, trim and style normally.
Closely, but not identically. Scalp hair grows faster and longer than beard hair and is sometimes straighter, so it will need more frequent trimming. Once everything is kept to the same length, the blend is seamless.
Plan seven to ten days. Unlike a scalp transplant, you cannot cover this with a hat — redness and small crusts are visible on your face for about a week, with pinkness fading over the following fortnight.
The local anaesthetic injections into the face are more uncomfortable than into the scalp — worth knowing in advance. After that you should feel pressure rather than pain, and afterwards the donor area is the sorer part.
Yes, and it is one of the most satisfying uses. Grafts placed into a scar from acne, injury, surgery or a cleft lip repair break up the visible line. Scar tissue has poorer blood supply, so growth is slightly less predictable and some surgeons plan a second pass.
Probably. Facial hair commonly continues filling in until the mid-twenties, and transplanting at 21 spends donor hair on gaps that might have closed on their own. Most surgeons suggest waiting until at least 24.
Often, if density rather than coverage is the goal. The first session establishes the beard line and fills the obvious gaps; a second twelve months later thickens it once you can see how the first grew.
Sometimes, if the total is within safe donor limits. A full beard plus a Norwood 4 scalp is around 5,000 grafts, which is more than most donor areas should give in one sitting. Your surgeon will tell you whether to split it across two trips.
