Medical interpretation, translated documents, and why consent in your own language matters

Every consultation, every consent form and every document you take home is handled in a language you actually understand. This is not a courtesy — consent given through a half-understood conversation is not informed consent, and a discharge summary your own doctor cannot read is close to useless.

  • Included in every package
  • Medical interpreters, not general
  • Documents you can hand to your GP

What is included

Language support runs through the whole process rather than appearing at the consultation and disappearing afterwards.

  • Your coordinator, who speaks English and is the same person from first enquiry to your twelve-month review.
  • Interpretation at every clinical consultation — assessment, pre-operative discussion, consent and discharge.
  • Written quotes, treatment plans and consent forms in a language you read fluently.
  • Your discharge summary, operation note and, where relevant, implant passport, provided in English.
  • Aftercare instructions in writing, in your language, rather than explained once at a bedside and half remembered.
  • Interpretation for aftercare contacts during the twelve months after you fly home.

Interpretation during your care

A medical interpreter is present at every clinical conversation, and the standard is understanding rather than politeness.

  1. Before you travel: your assessment and quote are handled in writing, in your language, with your coordinator available by WhatsApp for anything unclear.
  2. Assessment day: an interpreter is present for your consultation with the surgeon or dentist. The plan, the alternatives and what will change if the imaging shows something unexpected are all gone through properly.
  3. Consent: this conversation is slower than you might expect, deliberately. Risks, realistic outcomes, recovery restrictions and what happens if a complication occurs are all covered, and you are asked to repeat back the key points.
  4. On the ward: nursing staff and interpreters are available for the practical conversations — pain relief, mobility, drains, what you may eat.
  5. Discharge: your instructions are explained verbally and given to you in writing, in your language. These are the instructions that determine your result, so they are not left to memory.
  6. After you fly home: aftercare check-ins are conducted in your language, and your surgeon's comments on your photographs are translated for you.

Medical interpreters, not general ones

There is a meaningful difference between someone who speaks two languages and someone trained to interpret clinical conversations. Anatomical terms, risk percentages, medication names and the distinction between "uncommon" and "rare" all need accurate rendering. Valentmedica uses interpreters experienced in medical settings for consent and clinical discussions rather than whoever is available.

Documents you take home

You fly home with a complete, readable record — because aftercare in your own country depends on your own doctor being able to read what was done.

This is the quietest failure in medical travel. A patient returns with a folder in a language their GP cannot read, develops a problem six weeks later, and nobody locally knows what was implanted, what was removed or what antibiotics were given. It is avoidable and it is included.

  • Operation note: what was performed, by whom, and any findings. In English.
  • Discharge summary: your stay, medication given, medication to continue, and follow-up arrangements. In English.
  • Implant passport: brand, batch and dimensions for breast implants, dental implants and any device left in place. This matters years later, when a replacement part is needed.
  • Imaging: X-rays, CBCT scans and ultrasound reports, provided digitally on request.
  • Histology results: for any tissue removed — breast reduction, gynecomastia, capsulectomy — sent to you when available.
  • Aftercare plan: written instructions and the schedule of your twelve-month check-ins.

  • Request your preferred language at the enquiry stage, not on arrival. Arranging an interpreter for a specific consultation takes notice.
  • There is no additional charge for interpretation included in your treatment plan.
  • Certified translation of documents for insurance or legal purposes can be arranged at cost, and we will tell you the price in advance.
  • If your language is not listed, ask. We will tell you honestly whether we can arrange it properly rather than improvising on the day.

Translation services: frequently asked questions

Yes, for every clinical conversation in your treatment plan — assessment, consent, ward discussions, discharge and your twelve months of aftercare. There is no additional charge.

Consultations are conducted in English, with a medical interpreter present. For consent and clinical discussions we use interpreters experienced in medical settings rather than whoever is available, because the accuracy of terms and risk wording matters.

Tell us at the enquiry stage and we will arrange interpretation in your language. Arabic, German, French, Dutch, Russian and others can be arranged with notice. If we cannot arrange your language properly, we will say so rather than improvise.

One you read fluently. Signing a consent form you do not fully understand is not informed consent, and we would rather slow a consultation down than have you agree to something you have not properly grasped.

An operation note, a discharge summary, aftercare instructions, and where relevant an implant passport with brand and batch numbers — all in English. Imaging and histology results are provided on request.

Because aftercare at home depends on it. A patient who returns with records their GP cannot read, and then has a problem, leaves their local doctor guessing about what was implanted or removed. Hand the folder over rather than filing it.

English is standard. Translation into other languages is available on request, and certified translation for insurance or legal purposes can be arranged at cost with the price agreed in advance.

Say so, and ask for it again. That is exactly what the interpreter is there for. Nobody will think less of you, and a consultation where you nodded through a risk you did not follow has failed regardless of how pleasant it was.

Yes. Nursing staff and interpreters are available for the practical conversations — pain relief, mobility, drains, what you may eat and when. Your coordinator is also reachable by WhatsApp throughout.

Yes. If a partner or family member is with you, they are part of the conversation, which is often valuable — a second person remembering discharge instructions is genuinely useful after an anaesthetic.

Your twelve months of check-ins are conducted in your language, and your surgeon's comments on the photographs you send are translated for you. The language support does not stop at the airport.

Yes, without needing to explain. Tell your coordinator. These are conversations about your body and your consent, and feeling comfortable in them is not a luxury.
