How long should you stay in Turkey after a tummy tuck?

Why most patients stay seven to ten days, what happens each day, and how to make the flight home safe

4 min readUpdated September 2026Written for UK patients

Most patients stay in Istanbul for seven to ten days after a tummy tuck. That might sound long for a one-day operation, but each of those days has a purpose: drains, wound checks and lowering the risk of blood clots before a four-hour flight. Here is what happens, and how to plan your trip.

Why seven to ten days?

The extra days are not only about flying. They let your surgeon see you through the period when most early problems appear.

  • Drains are often placed during surgery to remove fluid, and are usually taken out after a few days.
  • Wound checks confirm the long incision is healing, with no signs of infection or wound breakdown.
  • Seroma (a collection of fluid) is most often spotted in the first week and is easy to treat while you are still close to your surgeon.
  • Blood clots are a recognised risk after abdominal surgery; time and movement before a long flight reduce it.

Combined procedures such as a mommy makeover, or liposuction alongside the tummy tuck, can mean a stay closer to ten days.

Your tummy tuck trip, day by day

Move through the plan below to see what happens at each stage of a typical trip.

Most of the stay is quiet recovery in a hotel close to the hospital, with your coordinator on call and check-ups arranged for you. Use the recovery planner after the trip to map your own dates, flights and return to work.

Your trip, day by day

Tummy Tuck: 7–10 days in Istanbul

  1. Before you travelFree online assessment

Send photos and your medical history. A plastic surgeon reviews your case and you receive a personal treatment plan and written quote.

  2. Day 1Arrival and consultation

Your driver meets you at the airport. You meet your surgeon, agree the final plan, have your markings discussed and complete your blood tests.

  3. Day 2Surgery day

You are admitted in the morning. The operation takes 2–5 hours under general anaesthetic, and you wake up in your hospital room with your compression garment in place.

  4. Days 3–4Hospital to hotel

Nurses help you walk early to protect your circulation. After 1–2 nights you move to your hotel, with your coordinator on call.

  5. Days 5–8Check-ups and drain removal

Your surgeon checks your wounds, changes dressings and removes any drains when fluid levels allow.

  6. Days 7–10Fit-to-fly check and flight home

Once your surgeon confirms you are fit to fly, you head home with your aftercare plan, medication and garment.

  7. At homeRemote aftercare

Share progress photos and questions with your coordinator and surgeon. We recommend telling your GP or doctor about your surgery.

In hospital and at the hotel

You will usually spend one or two nights in hospital. Nurses help you walk within hours of surgery, which is one of the best ways to prevent clots. You will wear a compression garment day and night, and walk slightly bent at first while the tightened skin settles.

At the hotel, short, regular walks, plenty of water and rest are the plan. A good partner hotel has lifts, step-free access and room service, and is close to the hospital for check-ups. Read about our partner hotels.

Making the flight home safer and more comfortable

  • Wear your compression garment and, if advised, compression stockings
  • Book an aisle seat so you can stand and walk regularly
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol
  • Flex your ankles and calves every half hour
  • Keep your medication and aftercare instructions in your hand luggage
  • Ask the airline for assistance at the airport if you need it

Seek urgent help if you notice calf pain, swelling or warmth in one leg, or sudden breathlessness. See flying home after surgery for more detail.

Recovery once you are home

Typical tummy tuck recovery
WhenWhat to expect
Weeks 1–2Walking slightly bent, garment day and night, short walks every day
Weeks 2–3Standing straighter; desk work is often possible
Weeks 4–6Most swelling settles; gentle exercise as your surgeon advises
Week 6 onwardsReturn to the gym and lifting, step by step
Months 3–6Final shape; the scar continues to fade for 12–18 months

The NHS suggests allowing around four to six weeks off work and exercise after a tummy tuck. Your surgeon will review your progress by video at set milestones.

Planning tips before you book

  • Book flexible return flights. If your surgeon wants to see you for an extra day, you should be able to stay.
  • Plan time off work around the recovery, not just the trip.
  • Reach a stable weight first. Results last best when your weight has been steady for six to twelve months.
  • Stop smoking well before surgery: it significantly increases wound-healing problems.
  • Check what is included: garment, medication, drains, hotel nights and aftercare.

Full, mini and extended tummy tucks

The type of tummy tuck affects both recovery and how long you should stay.

Tummy tuck types
TypeWhat it treatsTypical stay
Mini tummy tuckLoose skin below the belly button only5–7 days
Full tummy tuckSkin and muscle separation above and below the belly button7–10 days
Extended tummy tuckSkin around the hips and flanks as well8–10 days
Fleur-de-lisVertical and horizontal excess after major weight loss10 days or more

Your surgeon recommends the type after examining you in person. Combining liposuction or breast surgery usually adds a day or two.

Risks and how they are reduced

  • Seroma (fluid collection): reduced by drains, garments and early checks.
  • Wound healing problems: much more likely in smokers, so stop well before surgery.
  • Blood clots: reduced by early walking, stockings and, where needed, blood-thinning injections.
  • Infection: reduced by sterile technique, antibiotics and wound checks.
  • Scarring: the scar sits low, under underwear, and fades over twelve to eighteen months.

Choosing an accredited hospital with intensive care on site, and staying long enough for your surgeon to check you, are the most important safety steps. Read is it safe to have surgery in Turkey?

Frequently asked questions

Most surgeons recommend seven to ten days, so drains can be removed, your wound checked and your clot risk reduced before a long flight. Your surgeon decides.

It is not essential, but it helps a great deal in the first week. Packages usually include a twin room, so the main extra cost is their flight.

Most people sleep slightly propped up with knees bent for the first one to two weeks, then gradually return to normal.

Usually around six weeks, day and night at first. Your surgeon will give you a written plan.
