What 'Turkey teeth' really are
The problem in most of those photos is not the country but the treatment choice.
In many widely shared cases, people asked for veneers and received full crowns: caps that cover the whole tooth. To fit a crown, the tooth is filed down on all sides, sometimes to a small peg. On healthy teeth, that removes structure that can never be replaced and can lead to sensitivity, nerve problems and gum inflammation.
The other common issue is design. Very white, very square teeth of the same length look artificial in almost every face. A good smile has variation: slightly different lengths, a natural curve following the lower lip and a shade that matches the whites of the eyes rather than a bathroom tile.
Veneers vs crowns: the difference that matters
| Porcelain veneer | Crown | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | The front and edge of the tooth | The whole tooth |
| Enamel removed | Usually 0.3–0.7 mm, sometimes none | Typically 1.5–2 mm all round |
| Best for | Colour, shape, small gaps and chips on healthy teeth | Broken, heavily filled or root-treated teeth |
| Reversible? | No, but conservative | No, and far more invasive |
| Typical lifespan | 10–15+ years | 10–20 years |
Many smiles combine both: veneers on healthy front teeth and crowns where a tooth genuinely needs one. A dentist who recommends crowns on every tooth for a cosmetic case should explain why.
Planning a smile that still looks like you
The best cosmetic dentistry is the kind people notice as 'you look well', not 'you have had your teeth done'.
- Start with your face. Smile width, lip line and the shape of your face guide tooth shape and length.
- Choose a natural shade. Most dentists recommend a shade close to the whites of your eyes. Ask to see shade options in daylight.
- Decide how many teeth. Most smiles show 8–10 upper teeth. Twenty veneers is not always necessary.
- Ask for a digital design and mock-up. You should see and approve the result before any tooth is prepared.
- Fix the foundations first. Gum disease, decay and grinding should be treated before cosmetic work.

Living with veneers
- Brush twice a day and clean between teeth; the tooth underneath can still decay.
- See a dentist and hygienist at home every six months.
- Wear a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth.
- Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or bottle tops.
- Expect to replace porcelain veneers after 10–15 years or more.
Choosing a cosmetic dentist
The questions to ask before you agree to any treatment plan.
- Why this treatment? Ask why veneers, crowns or a mix are recommended for each tooth, and what the more conservative option would be.
- How much enamel will be removed? For veneers, a good answer is measured in fractions of a millimetre.
- Will I see the design first? A digital smile design and, ideally, a mock-up should come before any preparation.
- Which material and laboratory? E.max and zirconia porcelain are common; ask where your veneers are made.
- What is guaranteed? Ask what is covered, for how long, and how repairs work once you are home.
Our dental team follows a conservative approach: the least preparation that achieves the result you want. Read more about dental treatment in Turkey.
Alternatives to veneers
Veneers are not the only way to a better smile, and sometimes not the best one. Depending on what bothers you, simpler options can work well.
| Concern | Often considered | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Colour only | Teeth whitening | No tooth preparation; works on natural teeth |
| Small chips or gaps | Composite bonding | Quick and minimal, but stains and wears sooner |
| Gummy smile | Gum contouring | Reshapes the gum line, often alongside veneers |
| Crowding | Clear aligners first | Straightening can reduce the preparation needed |
| Missing teeth | Dental implants | Replaces the root as well as the crown |
A good dentist will talk you through these before recommending veneers.
Frequently asked questions
Porcelain veneers need a thin layer of enamel removed, usually less than a millimetre, and sometimes none. That is permanent, so veneers are a lifelong commitment, but they are far less invasive than crowns.
Most people look best with a shade close to the whites of their eyes. The very brightest shades tend to look artificial, especially in daylight and photographs.
Mild crowding can sometimes be disguised with veneers, but significant crowding is often better treated with aligners first, which can mean less preparation of your teeth.
Small chips can often be polished or repaired. A broken veneer is replaced. Ask what your guarantee covers and how repairs work once you are home.
